This is a collection of original and derivative content including demos and presets/shaders that I have created.

The software is mentioned in each item, if you would like the source file, get in touch.  I appreciate how the generosity of others has helped me learn, I hope I can do the same for you.

Manipulating Resolume with an XBox controller

As a VJ I am always looking for new and fun angles rather than just “playing loops”. I have a couple of XBox controllers lying around and spent quite a while trying different software to connect it to Resolume. It ended up that the most robust and easiest way was using software I already have, TouchOSC.

The plan is to let ravers have a play with the visuals. I have had a few Doof Test Dummiesâ„¢ try it out and they all thought it was huge fun and want to try it on the dance floor.

This video was the first full blown tryout and is unedited…this is what came out the very first try…I’m pretty happy with it ;o)

For Resolume users: The setup is to have all the effects I want on the Composition level with the parameters set how I want them and they are bypassed. Then I map the buttons and sticks on the controller to disable the bypass. I could tweak it so that joysticks provide analogue input rather than digital, but for the amount of work, compared to how it is used (mashing buttons & joysticks), I think it is overkill.  Click Here to download the TouchOSC and Resolume files – BYO clips.

And here’s a “secret sauce” hint that I have discovered since uploading the files; play with the order of the effects in the stack. Some are better near the top, some near the bottom.  For example, if they are both active, look at what happens with Triangulate above Polkadot compared to below.

Spout into MilkDrop3 from Resolume

I hang out in a few VJ forums and people often show “VJ loops” they have created.   The loops are often interesting and I have no idea how they make them, so hat tip to their skills. But in my opinion, if you use other people’s creations and don’t make the content your own in some way, what is the point.

In this case, I took an interesting but kind of boring Beeple loop in Resolume and am astonished at how it turned out after I blended it with a specific MilkDrop3 preset.

Every time the preset is loaded it gives a random result that is unpredictable and not repeatable which is both a shame and great at the same time.

If you use MilkDrop3Pro and TouchOSC I have spent a lot of time making an interface that may be useful for you.

Download V1.2 here – it might not be a bad idea to check back for updates.  V2 will be the most complete and stable when I get there.

Feel free to use it and share it.

I am assuming you will know how to map MIDI in MD3 and OSC in Resolume.   If you get stuck, send me a message and I will write a how-to.   But I would suggest learning to do it yourself along with tweaking the controller to your liking.

Any improvement suggestions welcome.
